Can Working Moms Really Have it All? (Do Zebras Have Stripes?)

working mom, single mom

In the real world, 90% of single moms are working moms. We all know the life of a working mom is hard enough. There's this thing called the “second shift”- heard of it? You know, where moms work a job all day, then they come home to another job- the job of nanny/housekeeper/cook/house manager. I know it's not fair that us girls often do most of the work on the home front in a relationship, but let's think about why that is...we're GOOD at it!

Now that you're on your own, think of it this way; you don't have to feel resentful that your partner's not helping around the house. For the single mom, the second shift is very real. It's all you, girl.

The fact of the matter is: girls have been scientifically proven to be better multi-taskers. It's true- girls have a bigger hypothalamus than boys. That's the part of the brain that connects the left and right hemispheres. It's what makes it easier for us to switch gears and manage so many things at once. In other words, we have an advantage, girls! The trick is to use it to increase quality of life, not to take on entirely too many things.

Only trouble is, there are probably plenty of times when you don't feel like a master of multi-tasking. You wonder if you really can find a career that is fulfilling without neglecting your kids. You wonder if your house will ever be clean; will you ever catch up on the laundry? Your kids wonder if it's possible to get tired of fast food.

I wish I could tell you there's a magic pill or shake made just for working moms that would make it all so much easier. We both know that's not the case. However, there are a few tricks of the trade that will streamline your life.

Sure, you could spend your time moping over the fact that you have to work, or that you don't have the time to cook as much as you'd like, or play with your kids as much as you used to. You could tell yourself your career is doomed. But taking control of your life is so much more empowering.

Come back here for tips on organizing your home and your time. Learn how to climb the career ladder without sacrificing your family. Whatever you do, the key is to find what works for you to find peace in your life. Thrive after divorce isn't just some cute tagline. It is a very real possibility. Can working moms have it all? Well, that is entirely up to you.

This guide is a work in progress. Stay tuned for useful articles focused on you; the single working mom.
